At first glance it may seem that crocheting a hat is very difficult, but it is not so. Of course, knitted hats look much closer to store-bought clothes, but this is their drawback. It may be a little more difficult to crochet a warm hat, but you have more room for imagination.

Crocheting hats can be divided into several parts:

  • Choosing the right model
  • Selection of hook and yarn
  • Taking measurements
  • The process of knitting a hat

Let's start with selecting a model. Do you need a warm hat for fall/winter or a light one for spring? Do you like pom-pom hats, berets or beanies? Based on this data, we look for the model we need:

  • Crochet beanie hat
  • Crochet beret
  • Hat with pompom

Taking measurements for crocheting a hat

  1. AB – depth of the cap, measured from the forehead to the neck (from the eyebrows to the beginning of hair growth).
  2. CD – cap height – measured from one ear to the other through the crown. This size needs to be divided in half.
  3. Head circumference (head circumference) - measured along the line of the forehead and the protruding part of the back of the head. This is your hat size (for adults from 54-62 cm).

In accordance with the measurements taken, you can start knitting a hat. But, if you have a model at hand, or you are knitting for yourself, then the easiest way is to try it on one more time and not bother taking measurements.

Now you need to choose the right yarn. For a winter hat, we recommend using wool blend yarn or acrylic. A hat usually only needs 1-2 skeins, so don’t skimp on yarn. It is better to take imported yarn, because... it is softer and does not make your head itch. If you are allergic to wool, then buy cashmere. 100% cashmere yarn is very expensive, so choose yarn that contains at least 50% cashmere.

If high-quality yarn in your stores is very expensive, then sew a lining from fleece for a winter crocheted hat or from knitwear for an autumn hat.

For a light spring crocheted hat, you can buy yarn with a cotton composition, at least 50% cotton and 50% acrylic will be enough. Choose the thickness of the yarn depending on the size of the hook.

How to choose the right hook for the yarn when crocheting hats

Take the thread and lightly twist it in half. The thickness of the twisted yarn should be equal to the thickness of your hook. It is best to start by knitting a small sample of 10*10 cm and see how the yarn behaves and whether the chosen pattern is suitable for it. Sometimes you think you've found a really nice crochet hat, but your yarn just isn't right for it.

And finally, we want to say that the easiest way to crochet a hat is according to the pattern, but sometimes it’s enough to look at several dozen models to understand what exactly you want and start knitting. We have prepared a selection of crocheted hats from our readers to make it easier for you to decide. Knit for your health!

Master class: crochet hat with “shells” ornament

This time I decided to make two versions of my master class.
New format: mini master class. Everything in one photo!

It is convenient for remembering ideas. You just need to save this photo on your phone or computer and then reproduce the entire process of creating a header.

And if you need detailed instructions, you can refer to the classic master class on my blog.
By the way, here he is:

Crochet hat with "shells" ornament

You will need:

Yarn 100 g 225 m (I have wool blend)
Hook 4.5

Rubber:

The elastic band is knitted across to the desired length of the head circumference.

1st row: 12-14 air loops (depending on how high you want the elastic on the hat) + 1 lifting air loop.
2nd row and subsequent ones: single crochet for the back half loop + 1 lifting chain stitch.

The knitting is constantly turned and each subsequent row is knitted in the back half loop, thereby achieving the effect of an elastic band.

A little secret: at the end of each row, work the last single crochet through both halves of the loop of the bottom row (not through the back half loop). This will make the edge of the elastic look tight and neat.

Having reached the desired length, close the elastic into a circle: fold the first and last rows and knit them in half-columns.

Mathematics:

It is important to correctly calculate the final number of rows in the elastic so that in the future...
it was easy to knit the shells in a spiral pattern.
The number of rows in the elastic band must be a multiple of 6 minus 3. And correspond to the formula
N×6 - 3
Where N is the number of shells in a row.
Let me explain:
The repeat of the “shell” pattern, which we will use to knit the main part of the hat, consists of 6 loops. There are always N full shells in one row minus half of one shell, that is, 3 loops. This is necessary for a successful transition from one row to the next and knitting a hat in a spiral.
Thus:
A hat made from 100 g of 225 m yarn produced 14 shells in a circle.
14×6-3=81 rows in rib.
As an option:
A hat made from 100 g of 250 m yarn produced 15 shells in a circle.
15×6-3=87 rows in rib.

Main part:

1st row:
Turn the knitting across and knit one row with single crochets, knitting one stitch at the end of each row of elastic. This way the product will look neat, and it will be easier for you to start knitting shells.

2nd row:
"Shell" pattern according to the scheme:

We knit 5 double crochets into the third loop, skipping 2 from the working loop, then 1 single crochet into the third loop, again skipping 2 loops.

We repeat in a circle.

The last shell of this row ends at the top of the first shell. Thus, the shells of the next row will be located between the shells of the previous row, in a checkerboard pattern.

3 row - 17 row:
We continue the “shells” pattern. We knit 5 double crochets into a loop between the shells of the previous row, and we knit a single crochet over the top of the shell of the previous row, skipping two loops into the third.

Reduce the number of loops in the row.

Row 18:
We knit 3 double crochets in one loop, skip two, and single crochet in the third.

Row 19:
We knit 2 double crochets in one loop, skip one, and double crochet in the second.

Yarn 1 (45% wool, 35% polyamide and 20% alpaca wool; 150 m / 50 g) - 50 g gray-red,
yarn 2 (67% viscose, 33% wool; 310 m/50 g) - 50 g red; circular knitting needles No. 4.5; hook No. 4.5.

Patterns

Front stitch

In circular rows, constantly knit facial loops.

Crochet Beginning Row

Work 2 ch, insert hook into 1st ch. and *pull the thread, throw the thread over the hook and pull it through the 1st st on the hook, throw the thread over the hook again and pull it through both loops on the hook, grab the left outer wall of the loop with the hook, * repeat constantly.

Pattern "Shells"

Knit in circular rows according to pattern, with odd circular rows knitted with gray-red thread, even circular rows with red thread.

Start with loops before the repeat, repeat the repeat constantly, finish with loops after the repeat.

For the 3rd and 15th circle.r. using connection Art. go back to the beginning of the circle.r., for the 5th circle.r. go forward using conn. Art.

Perform the 1st–6th circle 1 time, then repeat the 3rd–6th circle 2 times. and finish the 15th–22nd lap.r.

Knitting density

16 p. = 10 cm, knitted with stockinette stitch using 2 red threads;
1 repeat x 8 circular rows = 6.5 x 8.5 cm, knitted with the main pattern.

Completing of the work

Using a double gray-red thread, crochet the initial row of 70 (80) loops and close it into a ring using 1 connection. Art.

After the 22nd lap. R. Pull the remaining 14 (16) sts tightly with a working thread.

For the initial row, cast on 80 (88) stitches using double red thread and knit 5 rounds for the rulik. in stockinette stitch, then bind off the stitches.

Autumn has come! The weather spoils us with bright sunshine less and less often. It's time to warm up. Today I propose to knit very beautiful and at the same time simple to make crochet!

For these mitts we will need:

  • Blue yarn;
  • Hook;
  • Scissors.

Let's start knitting with rubber bands. We will knit it with a sc. We form the initial chain of such length as the width of the elastic band. In this case it is 15 ch. We make 1 loop on the rise and knit 1 sc for the back wall of the loops.
At the end we make 1 ch and turn around. Next we will knit as many rows as needed for the size. We try on the elastic and see how many more rows need to be completed for the elastic to fit on the hand.
Photo 1

We connect the two ends of the elastic and sew it together.
Photo 2

Turn the elastic right side out.

Now for shell pattern we need to work in a circle, sc. Their number must be a multiple of 6.
In this case, 36 sc are knitted.
Photo 3

At the beginning of a new row, we need to perform 1 loop on the rise and knit 1 sc in the same place.
We skip 2 loops of the base and perform 5 dc in the 3rd loop.
Again we skip 2 loops and knit 1 sc into the 3rd loop.
Photo 4

Again we skip 2 loops and knit 5 dc in a new loop. So we will continue knitting until the very end of this row.
Photo 5

We started the last row with a sc, which means we’ll start this row with 3 lifting loops and another 2 dc in the same place.
In the 3rd dc of the previous row we knit 1 dc.
Now in the sc of the previous row we perform 5 dc.
So we continue knitting until the end of the row. At the end we knit 2 dc to the same point where we knit the lifting loops and 3 dc at the beginning of the row. We knit 1 connection. loop in 3 lifting loops.
Photo 6

In the next 2 rows we will increase to create a place for the thumb.
Since in the previous row we started knitting with 3 lifting loops, we start this row with 1 lifting loop and 1 sc at the same point.
Next, in the sc of the bottom row we will knit not 5 dc, but 7 dc. Then in the 3rd dc of the bottom row we make 1 dc, as in the previous rows. Next, we again knit not 5, but 7 dc.
This is where the increases ended. Next we knit in exactly the same way as in the previous rows.
Let's repeat this row 1 time.
In the next row we will increase again. But now we will knit not 7 dc in the first 2 shells, but 9 dc.
We try the mitt on our hand and determine the approximate number of rows to the thumb. We knit them with increments of 9 dc in the first 2 shells.
Photo 7

Now we will form a place for the finger. We start the row as usual. Then we knit 3 dc in the stitch of the previous row.
In 4 dc of the previous row we knit 1 connection. column. We dial 6 ch.
We skip 1 shell and in the sc of the previous row we knit 3 dc.
