How are pacifiers disinfected? Boiling, of course. The best remedy processing has not yet been invented. The pacifier is washed with running water, and then boiled for 3 minutes or disinfected in a sterilizer. Latex nipples are also more elastic - even if you chew them, it will be more difficult to bite through latex than silicone. However, unlike silicone, latex has a specific smell and taste, and some may not like it. Under the influence of light and high temperatures(sterilization) it breaks down faster: the latex nipple darkens, begins to stick together and collapse. Therefore, you need to change latex pacifiers quite often - after about 3-5 weeks.

Silicone nipples they have no taste and smell, while they are tighter and more elastic than latex, better withstand high-temperature processing and last longer - up to several months. True, it is easier to bite through a silicone nipple, and especially "toothy" guys can even bite off pieces of the nipple, which is very dangerous. The newborn pacifier should be checked regularly and if the slightest damage (deformation, cracks, tears) is found, the newborn pacifier should be discarded immediately and replaced with a new one. Silicone pacifiers are tasteless and odorless and will last for a long time - several months.

Mouthpiece- This is the base of the newborn pacifier in which the nipple is attached. Moreover, the attachment must be so reliable that the nipple cannot jump out of the pacifier when the baby is sucking it. Typically, mouthpieces are round or oval. The latter, in turn, can be made with a "heart" (with an upper cutout for the baby's nose) or a "butterfly" (there are cutouts both at the top and at the bottom, so it doesn't matter which side to take the pacifier into the mouth). Oval mouthpieces are most often straight or curved "to the face", following the outline of the child's mouth and chin. The main thing is that in such a mouthpiece there are enough ventilation holes through which air will pass to the skin and excess saliva come out, otherwise irritation may appear around the mouth. Classic round mouthpieces, as a rule, are straight or curved "from the face", and therefore such models "ventilate" without problems and suit everyone. The mouthpiece can be laconically simple or, conversely, bright, decorated with drawings and played as a flower, heart, animal face.

The same is true for the ring. In "smart" soothers for newborns, it is decorated with plot images, which brings a playful moment to the pacifier - babies like to look at the pictures, holding the pacifier by the ring, and bite it. Thanks to the ring, the dummy is more convenient for mothers to use: put it in the child's mouth, and when he falls asleep, carefully remove it. It is necessary to monitor how securely the ring is held on the dummy. Otherwise, it may accidentally detach and end up in the child's mouth, and this is a risk!

Do pacifiers have different nipples? Form is everything!

The nipples of the pacifiers also differ in shape. For the first acquaintance with a pacifier, you can offer the baby several options for a nipple for newborns, let him choose the most convenient one for himself.

The most common - round nipples for newborns of the "cherry" type with a ball at the end, shaped like a light bulb. The advantage of these nipples is that the baby can twist the pacifier in his mouth (especially when combined with a round mouthpiece) without fear of it being positioned incorrectly. The anatomical nipples of the "drop" type are slightly flattened, they are most similar to the mother's breast during feeding. These nipples occupy a minimum of space in the mouth between the palate and the tongue and do not provide negative impact on the formation of a bite, and due to their symmetrical shape, they will always fit in the mouth correctly.

In orthodontic nipples, the tip is slightly flattened and beveled at an angle. This form is positioned by manufacturers as forming a maxillofacial apparatus in a child. But, using a dummy with orthodontic pacifier, mothers should make sure that she is in the baby's mouth with the beveled side down: top-bottom should not get confused, and the pacifier should not stand sideways. Size matters!

A baby's pacifier should be matched to the age of the baby. Dimensional series pacifiers from different manufacturers may differ significantly from each other. Some trade marks the gradation is in two sizes (for example, 0-6, 6-18 months), for others in three (for example, 0-3, 3-6, 6+) - with an emphasis on models for newborns or, conversely, for babies older 1.5 years (these are 18+ models). Another option for overnight pacifiers is soft pacifiers that are made entirely of latex or silicone. The soft pacifier is monolithic and cannot be broken or disassembled. Most importantly, it does not interfere with the baby from changing position during sleep, does not leave imprints on the face, and even if it falls out of the mouth and ends up under the baby, he does not lay a barrel for himself.

But for the period of wakefulness, a toddler aged 4 months and older may well come in handy with a rattle pacifier. Per big ring It is convenient to hold the pacifier, the baby can look at it, twirl it in the hands, wave it - in response, it will “sound” quietly and thus amuse the child.

The nipple for a newborn should be of a uniform texture, without damage or deformation, when squeezing it with your fingers, it should not stick together and not let air through. Plastic fittings should be smooth, without cracks and sharp burrs that the baby can prick or scratch, and all the components should be securely connected to each other. Latex dark brown, sharp bad smell rubber or plastic - a reason to refuse to use a pacifier.
