Rating of pacifiers for newborns. Baby pacifiers: types, review of the best models, expert opinion on the benefits and harms. Baby dummy

Today manufacturers offer a huge range of baby pacifiers. Orthopedic, anatomical and orthodontic. With protective disc, silicone, latex, different colors, shapes and sizes. On a chain, string, clothespin, glowing or musical. What they just don't think of to distract little man from whims! Faced with all this diversity, even the most "advanced" mother does not always know how to choose a pacifier for her baby. However, there is nothing difficult in this, let's figure it out together.

After the baby is born, the mother's head is full of worries. The nipple is in the first place among the "problem" accessories, because it should not only satisfy the need for the sucking reflex of the baby, but also shape it.

Do I need a dummy for a newborn

Such a seemingly irreplaceable and familiar child's household item, upon closer examination, has both advantages and disadvantages.

Benefits of using

  • Pacifiers are among those baby products that miraculously soothe the baby. Whether he is hungry or in need of a diaper change, the accessory “works” even during testing, and this can be attributed to its merits.
  • In addition, some researchers note that nipples also protect against sudden death baby infancy during sleep. They also recommend napping or falling asleep with her baby during the first year of life.
  • A dummy can be useful if the baby is born ahead of time as it provokes sucking reflex.

disadvantages

  • The suction of the breast and nipples are different, and the baby is uncomfortable with frequent changes. Even if he takes the breast through a special pad.
  • Moreover, the newborn becomes addicted to the pacifier.
  • During sleep, when the nipple falls out, the baby begins to cry. Such anxiety affects the nervous system.
  • Continuous use of this item leads to middle ear disease, indigestion and lower respiratory tract infections.
  • Long-term use can change the shape of the jaw and mouth, affecting the teeth. In the future, the speech apparatus also suffers.

Choosing a dummy just like any other baby product, you must exercise caution and be careful. Right choice- the guarantee of not only success, but also the health of your little one.

We accustom the baby

Some babies suck their thumb before they are born. But this does not mean that as soon as the baby is born, he needs to be handed a pacifier. You should not start feeding with a formula either, because it is much easier to pull milk from a bottle.

Many babies refuse to breastfeed after a nipple. Wait for the feeding to get better. At 3-4 or 6-8 weeks, when the schedule is established, you can invite the baby to suck on it between feeds.

Don't use your pacifier as your first defense. Sometimes a change in position or swaying can calm a crying baby. Do not insist if the baby flatly refuses to accept the pacifier.

Weaning off the nipple

As practice shows, it is much more difficult to wean a child from a nipple than to teach it. The kid is already used to her, he is so calmer. But you can't spend too much time with a dummy either. This can lead to a number of problems. And the wrong act of excommunication can cause psychological trauma.

Doctors recommend starting between 6-9 months. It's easier at this age, they say. During the day, the baby can be distracted by constantly switching his attention, and at night you can give a breast. If it doesn't work out at this age, postpone the question, and at 1.5-2 years old come back and try to come to an agreement with the child. Tell a story or remove the pacifier after the baby falls asleep, and in the morning explain that he has already grown and the pacifier has disappeared.

Be consistent. Remember, you are not the only person who has a baby moving away from the nipple. Just stay close to him. Make sure all other family members - grandparents, nannies - follow the same plan. This will make the process easier.

Pros and cons

Many parents are sure that their child does not need a nipple - "Why accumulate problems, which then need to be dealt with?" At the same time, others experience tremendous relief by using a pacifier.

Experts note that using the pacifier, the newborn refuses breastfeeding... In addition, it can interfere with the sucking reflex and disrupt the feeding schedule. However, "pacifier advocates" argue that a properly fitted nipple has absolutely no effect on breastfeeding. Moreover, it soothes children with increased excitability.

Hygiene

  1. Once you've selected your favorite pacifier, keep multiple of the same backups handy.
  2. Keep them clean, in a separate jar or box.
  3. Remove after falling to the floor or ground. You don't need to lick the nipple yourself, your mouth is not the most sterile place. And up to 6 months, a child has a weak immune system.
  4. Boil or wash in the dishwasher.
  5. After six months, the falling pacifiers can simply be washed with soap or boiled water.
  6. Don't dip in sweets.

Change the nipples as often as possible and use according to the age of your little one. And if suddenly it breaks or breaks, be sure to change it to a new one, because the child may choke.

The opinion of Dr. Komarovsky

A nipple is needed to prevent the baby from sucking the thumb, but if the baby spits it out, do not insist. Listen to your child, if he wants to suck, let him suck, but you shouldn't train your baby on purpose.

Nobody can say 100% whether evil is a dummy or good. The truth is somewhere in the middle - and the kid will tell you the correct answer.

When a pacifier is in the house an assistant - great. And if she is not a friend, but an enemy, say goodbye. After losing the nipple, the child is so upset that the parents see no other way out but to urgently replace the accessory. Moreover, it does not matter at all at what cost. Many mothers, even in the middle of the night, look for round-the-clock pharmacies and send their father-messenger for the coveted miracle cure.

We select the nipple

The best pacifier is the one your baby chooses. Therefore, before buying a dozen of one brand, take a few, but from different manufacturers.

Build on what's important - continued physical development baby. It is better to use nipples that are ventilated. This allows air to pass well, which will greatly facilitate its stay in the baby's mouth.

The form

  1. Classic - the most common old-style teat. It is more modern, but it completely repeats the mother's breast, especially the latex accessory. The baby easily sucks in a small rounded papilla and feels calmer, since he practically does not feel the difference.
  2. Anatomical. Its difference is in the form of a papilla. It is oblong and slightly flattened. This distributes the pressure to the palate. In addition, this series has an age range, which makes it possible to use it as the child grows up.
  3. Orthodontic... At first glance, the nipple is very similar to a normal nipple, but if you look closely, you can see that its nipple is slightly slanted and flattened. It was created taking into account the structure of the maxillofacial system. Includes protective disc and retaining ring. Suitable for children of all ages. Helps premature babies form a sucking reflex.
  4. Orthopedic - a completely new copy. The nipple is shaped like a droplet and takes up very little space in the baby's mouth. Includes a vent valve to relieve pressure on the baby's palate. This minimizes the risk of tooth deformation. Helps to form the correct bite.
  5. Pacifier with protective disc- equipped with a wide base that prevents the baby from swallowing it. The disc has two holes on the sides or pimples. This protects against drooling build-up and further irritation.

Pacifier size

Common classification:

  • A - 0-6 months
  • B - 6-18 months
  • C - 18 months and older.

When choosing one or another nipple, pay attention to the manufacturer's recommendations. After all, their divisions may differ from generally accepted norms... Do not forget that the size of the nipple should grow with your little one. The amount of food that he will receive directly depends on this.

Determining the material

  • Rubber - impractical and short-lived, poorly proven teat, which is finally becoming a thing of the past. Its only plus can be seen at the time of teething. And then, one should be wary of diathesis.
  • Made of latex - soft and elastic thanks to the fact that it is made of rubber. Natural nipples work well for babies who were born prematurely. Are light brown or transparent color... The disadvantages are that they wear out quickly, darken from the sun and, alas, can cause allergies.
  • Silicone - elastic, colorless and odorless. More hardy when boiled and does not cause allergies. Cons - very tough, can affect the growth of milk teeth. So if the choice fell on it, use it long before they appear.

Pay attention to the plastic from which the nipple is made. The ideal item should be free of BPA, parabens, PVC and phthalates. Many manufacturers use artificial colors and chemical softeners, which are harmful to the baby.

Try to choose a one-piece pacifier to prevent breakage and swallowing of small particles.

Conclusion

The assortment of baby pacifiers is huge and varied. Each manufacturer strives to take into account the needs of babies, but the choice is still up to the parents. When buying a pacifier, you need to take into account both the age of the baby and individual characteristics, and budget.

However, the decisive opinion will remain with the child: after all, to use it, it means that he will choose the dummy he likes. You can help him and purchase several from different manufacturers. Fortunately, now there are a lot of quality pacifiers at affordable prices! Enjoy the shopping!

What should be a nipple for a newborn? If mom or dad comes to the store, they will be surprised at the variety of baby nipples. They differ in shape, material, size, weight. So which one to choose? Let's consider the criteria in more detail.

The weight

In this criterion, a clear advantage is the ease of the nipple, since it will be inconvenient for the baby to hold it in his hands if he already knows how to do it.

The size

The dummy is selected for the child in accordance with his age... Different manufacturers can change the values of the size ranges, so you should focus on the age of the baby. Some brands produce nipples in two sizes, others in three with a focus on weak and premature babies or big guys over 1.6 years old.

For small and premature babies, the pacifiers have a small and soft nipple and a lightweight mouthpiece.

The size must be suitable for the baby, otherwise a very small nipple will continually fall out of the mouth, and a large one will not allow full breathing and will cause vomiting. Lip pads should also not be very large and heavy.

Please read the size chart before choosing a nipple. Basically, the dimensions are as follows:

  1. from 0 to 6 months;
  2. from 6 to 12 months;
  3. from one year to 18 months.

IMPORTANT! The division by months is rather arbitrary, since all children are different. Parents should keep an eye on the timing of the use of pacifiers. It is better if the child has several of them.

The form

Nipples come in different shapes:

  • classic (round);
  • anatomical;
  • orthodontic.

The most common and familiar shape is round... This nipple looks narrow at the restraint, gradually widens towards the end, the nipple is rounded. However, with prolonged use of this type of nipple, the child may develop an irregular bite.

The anatomical shape corresponds to the structure of the baby's gums. The nipple is adjacent to the tongue, flattened on one side, and has the shape of an ellipse. The design of the pacifier ensures an even distribution of pressure on the baby's palate. With such a nipple, the child will not swallow air and will properly develop his bite.

The most popular nipple is the orthodontic one. Her nipple is sloping, it is slightly flattened on one side and convex on the other. Teardrop shape fits comfortably in oral cavity... They are divided into several types:

The name is given by the shape of the mountings. There is also a symmetrical nipple that is flat on both sides. It is convenient because it can be put in the child's mouth with either side.

The controversy over whether a pacifier helps to form a bite continues. Some experts are skeptical about the orthodontic form and believe that it, on the contrary, spoils the bite.

Manufacturing material

Latex, or rubber, is natural material ... He looks yellow color... Usually, such nipples are recommended for weak and premature babies, since latex in the mouth when heated is very similar to mother's breast. The main disadvantage of this material is the presence of protein molecules, and this can lead to allergies. Also latex gets dirty faster.

You should not buy nipples from unknown manufacturers. low prices, as the material may be of poor quality and release carcinogenic substances.

Latex is a short-lived material, afraid of direct sun rays ... Due to its softness, small cracks form on its surface. The pacifier should be replaced in the following cases:

  • if it has turned brown;
  • if, when sucking, the walls begin to stick to each other.

Silicone teats are very popular.... it synthetic material, transparent in appearance. The main advantage is that children are not allergic to silicone. Unlike latex, it does not lose its shape, retains its properties for a long time, does not absorb odors, and is easy to clean.

A full-term baby with a developed sucking reflex will appreciate the nipple made from this material. Also, the product can often be disinfected, but everything tends to deteriorate. After a while, they become tough and crumble. For this reason, the pacifier should not be given to a child with teeth, as he can bite off a piece and choke.

How to choose a protective disc?

The pacifier ring is called a protective disc that prevents swallowing of the nipple.... The requirements are as follows:

  1. The width should be such that the child does not catch it in the mouth.
  2. Lightness of the disc; the presence of pimples and holes on the surface - to exclude close contact to the skin, but also to adhere to the mouth, so that saliva does not accumulate between the nipple and lips.
  3. Monolithic form without additional parts.

Photo

In the photo below you can see different kinds pacifiers for babies:

The renowned pediatrician believes that if you do not offer the baby a pacifier at all, he will begin to suck his thumb... An unsatisfied sucking reflex passes on its own at a certain age - it is useless to fight the instinct.

When choosing a pacifier, it is better to give preference to silicone anatomical or orthodontic shapes that are appropriate for the child's age. Don't choose bulky pacifiers. You should also inspect the pacifier for collapsible parts - it is important that they are not there.

Conclusion

So, when choosing a pacifier for a baby, you need to be guided by his age, correctly determine the size of the nipple and decide on suitable form... Caring for the product is no less important, since if it is not replaced in a timely manner, an infection can enter the child's body. Store nipples in clean sealed cases.

A baby with a pacifier in her mouth is a familiar picture for everyone. No matter what opponents of pacifiers may say, the pacifier is sedative for the kid. Parents decide whether to give it or not. And we will consider the question of which nipples for newborns are the best.

Why is the newborn pacifier the number one calming agent? Because it provides vital needs for a baby:

  • satisfies the innate sucking reflex;
  • helps to calmly fall asleep;
  • promotes the departure of gas workers;
  • replaces thumb sucking;
  • compensates for the lack of mother's breast.

There are babies who do not respond to a pacifier - but they are just the exception to the rule. The mothers of such babies are tormented by the issue of teaching the baby to the nipple, because it has a beneficial effect on psycho-emotional state baby. Other moms don't know how - that's also a problem. Maybe you just need to choose correct dummy? Consider which nipple is best for your baby.

What kind of nipples are there?

Manufacturers vying with each other are trying to please children and are constantly improving their products for babies. You can see a lot of different sucking devices in the most bizarre shapes and sizes. However, all pacifiers can be divided into two material categories:

  1. latex;
  2. silicone.

What is the difference? The difference is in the material. Silicone is an artificial composition of polymers that are safe for health. Latex - natural material made from specially treated rubber.

Silicone nipples are always transparent and can be easily recognized in the display case. Silicone is resistant to wear and tear and is easy to sanitize. However, when teeth are erupting, the silicone does not withstand the attacks of the baby, and the pacifier has to be replaced with a new one. Babies are not allergic to silicone, it does not absorb odors and is always easy to clean. Silicone does not lose its shape long time and is most suitable for babies. However, everything has its own term, and silicone from long-term use can crumble.

Important! Do not give silicone pacifiers after teething. Babies easily bite through the material and can swallow pieces of silicone.

Latex is more delicate and unstable to active mechanical stress. However, the advantage of latex is still its natural origin and an unconditional reminder of the skin of the mother's nipple. The disadvantage is the characteristic taste and smell of rubber and quick wear.

Latex has one more feature - the material contains protein molecules in its composition. It is on latex that some babies develop intolerance.

In addition, latex is more difficult to clean from dirt than silicone. Cheap ones are especially dangerous latex pacifiers: they may contain carcinogenic substances.

Advice. If you find it difficult to give preference to one or another pacifier, let the baby choose his own pacifier - he will not be mistaken.

Shape and dimensions

How to choose best dummy what shape? First, decide on the size: it is more important for the baby. Manufacturers always indicate the recommended age of the baby in the instructions for the product, but not all mothers know about this. The fact is that the wrong size of the pacifier can bring a lot of inconvenience to the baby, and he will push it out with his tongue. Take this moment responsibly!

The shape of the papilla can be standard (round and elongated) and the most bizarre. However, the "quirkiness" was created not to attract buyers to the dummy, but for quite specific purposes - for example, the formation of a bite. Therefore, before buying, read the instructions carefully, and then think about what to choose.

Which copies are better not to buy at all? Note:

  • the shield should not be too small so that the baby does not accidentally swallow the papilla;
  • the shield should not be too large so as not to cover the nose of the crumbs and not interfere with breathing.

Advice. It is better to choose a shield with ventilation holes: the baby will breathe calmly, and saliva will not collect under the shield.

Popular pacifiers

TO Which nipple is the best, which one to choose? Product rating is determined by customer demand. In our country, preference is given to foreign manufacturers of pacifiers. Top ten
there are products:

  • Nuk Genius - 270 rubles;
  • Pigeon - 155 rubles;
  • Philips AVENT - 250 rubles;
  • HEVEA - 375 rubles;
  • Bibi cherry silicone - 280 rubles;
  • Canpol Babies latex - 130 rubles

Nuk Genius is an orthodontic construction with a flattened sucking part. This German product is made of silicone or latex. A special advantage is the convenience of positioning the sucking part in the mouth of the baby. The price for pacifiers is approximate.

Dummy Pigeon from Japanese manufacturers is affordable and very convenient for the baby. The device of the sucking part stimulates the baby to full-fledged nasal breathing.
No minuses were found for this product. Manufacturers have created two types of their products - for active sucking and for weaning the baby from the papilla.

Probably the most popular product in our country. Not only papillae are widely used, but also bottles for milk and mixtures. The product has ventilation holes, the sucking part is made of high quality silicone composition. Disadvantages - the papilla is tear-shaped, which is not suitable for many babies due to the rigidity of the material itself.

Pacifier HEVEA made of latex. It is convenient in that it can withstand any bites with teeth. This product is very suitable for small nibbles, because they cannot bite off and swallow pieces of material! The product is equipped with ventilation holes and is made in various modifications (there are orthodontic specimens). The downside is the overpriced.

BIBI cherry is made of silicone. This dummy is more popular with parents because of its stylish design... It is not very convenient for babies: small ventilation holes, no anatomical shape. Dummy CANPOL BABIES notable for its inexpensive price and good performance. The product is manufactured in China, so the price level is not too high. The suction part is made of latex or silicone and has an orthodontic shape. Distinctive feature- the ring glows in the dark.

Nipple care

Everyone knows that pacifiers often end up on the floor or sidewalk. The picture of an angry baby throwing a pacifier out is also known to everyone. How to disinfect a contaminated item? Not your own saliva! Saliva contains a lot of bacteria unnecessary for the baby, which can upset his health.

How are pacifiers disinfected? Boiling, of course. The best remedy processing has not yet been invented. The pacifier is washed with running water, and then boiled for 3 minutes or disinfected in a sterilizer. The papillae should be kept either in an individual container or in a clean glass jar under the lid.

Important! Don't skimp on pacifiers. If cracks or scratches appear on the surface, replace the papilla with a new one. The damaged surface cannot be disinfected properly.

If you notice that the latex has turned brown, get rid of that nipple immediately.

If you notice that the walls of the papilla begin to stick together, this is also a signal for an immediate replacement of the product. In general, latex pacifiers last a maximum of up to a month, then they should be disposed of.

Important! To prevent the papilla from deforming prematurely, do not leave it near heating devices or in the sun.

How to get rid of stretch marks after childbirth?

The newborn pacifier consists of a nipple, a protective disc (mouthpiece) and a ring. The nipple is made of latex or silicone.

Latex nipples softer, so they are easier to suck, which is especially suitable for weak and "lazy" babies. Latex nipples are also more elastic - even if you chew them, it will be more difficult to bite through latex than silicone. However, unlike silicone, latex has a specific smell and taste, and some may not like it. Under the influence of light and high temperatures(sterilization) it breaks down faster: the latex nipple darkens, begins to stick together and collapse. Therefore, you need to change latex pacifiers quite often - after about 3-5 weeks.

Silicone nipples they have no taste and smell, while they are tighter and more elastic than latex, better withstand high-temperature processing and last longer - up to several months. True, it is easier to bite through a silicone nipple, and especially "toothy" guys can even bite off pieces of the nipple, which is very dangerous. The newborn pacifier should be checked regularly and if the slightest damage (deformation, cracks, tears) is found, the newborn pacifier should be discarded immediately and replaced with a new one. Silicone pacifiers are tasteless and odorless and will last for a long time - several months.

Mouthpiece- This is the base of the newborn pacifier in which the nipple is attached. Moreover, the attachment must be so reliable that the nipple cannot jump out of the pacifier when the baby is sucking it. Typically, mouthpieces are round or oval. The latter, in turn, can be made with a "heart" (with an upper cutout for the baby's nose) or a "butterfly" (there are cutouts both at the top and at the bottom, so it doesn't matter which side to take the pacifier into the mouth). Oval mouthpieces are most often straight or curved "to the face", following the outline of the child's mouth and chin. The main thing is that in such a mouthpiece there are enough ventilation holes through which air will pass to the skin and excess saliva come out, otherwise irritation may appear around the mouth. Classic round mouthpieces, as a rule, are straight or curved "from the face", and therefore such models "ventilate" without problems and suit everyone. The mouthpiece can be laconically simple or, conversely, bright, decorated with drawings and played as a flower, heart, animal face.

The same is true for the ring. In "smart" soothers for newborns, it is decorated with plot images, which brings a playful moment to the pacifier - babies like to look at the pictures, holding the pacifier by the ring, and bite it. Thanks to the ring, the dummy is more convenient for mothers to use: put it in the child's mouth, and when he falls asleep, carefully remove it. It is necessary to monitor how securely the ring is held on the dummy. Otherwise, it may accidentally detach and end up in the child's mouth, and this is a risk!

Do pacifiers have different nipples? Form is everything!

The nipples of the pacifiers also differ in shape. For the first acquaintance with a pacifier, you can offer the baby several options for a nipple for newborns, let him choose the most convenient one for himself.

The most common - round nipples for newborns of the "cherry" type with a ball at the end, shaped like a light bulb. The advantage of these nipples is that the baby can twist the pacifier in his mouth (especially when combined with a round mouthpiece) without fear of it being positioned incorrectly. The anatomical nipples of the "drop" type are slightly flattened, they are most similar to the mother's breast during feeding. These nipples occupy a minimum of space in the mouth between the palate and the tongue and do not provide negative impact on the formation of a bite, and due to their symmetrical shape, they will always fit in the mouth correctly.

In orthodontic nipples, the tip is slightly flattened and beveled at an angle. This form is positioned by manufacturers as forming a maxillofacial apparatus in a child. But, using a dummy with orthodontic pacifier, mothers should make sure that she is in the baby's mouth with the beveled side down: top-bottom should not get confused, and the pacifier should not stand sideways. Size matters!

A baby's pacifier should be matched to the age of the baby. Dimensional series pacifiers from different manufacturers may differ significantly from each other. Some trade marks the gradation is in two sizes (for example, 0-6, 6-18 months), for others in three (for example, 0-3, 3-6, 6+) - with an emphasis on models for newborns or, conversely, for babies older 1.5 years (these are 18+ models). There are also pacifiers specially sized for premature babies (the packaging says so, marked "0-3"). These pacifiers have a very small and soft "cherry" nipple, lightweight mouthpiece. Many domestic pacifiers are available in only one size, and on the packaging (if any) you can see the mark "0-24".

Another option for overnight pacifiers is soft pacifiers that are made entirely of latex or silicone. The soft pacifier is monolithic and cannot be broken or disassembled. Most importantly, it does not interfere with the baby from changing position during sleep, does not leave imprints on the face, and even if it falls out of the mouth and ends up under the baby, he does not lay a barrel for himself.

But for the period of wakefulness, a toddler aged 4 months and older may well come in handy with a rattle pacifier. Per big ring It is convenient to hold the pacifier, the baby can look at it, twirl it in the hands, wave it - in response, it will “sound” quietly and thus amuse the child.

Movable pacifiers will make the baby "work" a little. The peculiarity of this model is a movable nipple, which the child needs to "suck" out of the base, where it seeks to return. Such movements of the dummy reproduce the movements maternal breast while sucking her baby, and therefore there is less risk that he will refuse breastfeeding.

It is impossible to predict what kind of dummy the baby will like. It happens that an expensive and sophisticated model is mercilessly spat out by a little fussy. But the cheapest one simple dummy goes with a bang! If the child rejects the "new thing" - there is nothing to be done, you will have to continue the search. By the way, pacifiers cannot be returned or exchanged.

Sleep soother for sweet dreams

Night pacifiers are available especially for sleeping. Their task is not to disturb or disturb the baby while he is sleeping. Night pacifiers are made as streamlined as possible - with a mouthpiece that is straight or that follows the contours of the face. Many of them do not have a ring or it is small, does not go beyond the mouthpiece, and during sleep it is pressed against it, fixing with a click. By the way, some nighttime pacifiers have luminescent rings that glow in the dark with a greenish-bluish glow - mom can easily find a pacifier in the crib without turning on the light. In order for the luminescent pacifier to glow brighter and longer in the dark, before going to bed at night, it must be “charged” from the light by holding it, for example, under a switched on lamp.

What to look for when buying a pacifier for a newborn?

The nipple for a newborn should be of a uniform texture, without damage or deformation, when squeezing it with your fingers, it should not stick together and not let air through. Plastic fittings should be smooth, without cracks and sharp burrs that the baby can prick or scratch, and all the components should be securely connected to each other. Latex dark brown, sharp bad smell rubber or plastic - a reason to refuse to use a pacifier.
