Painting in the technique of quilling decoration in a frame. A picture made using the "quilling" technique: a chic interior decoration. Step by step description of work

Quilling, also known as paper rolling, is the art of making flat or volumetric compositions from long and narrow strips of paper twisted into spirals. The finished spirals are given various shapes and thus the paper-rolling elements, also called modules, are obtained.

Currently, quilling is very popular among needlewomen from different countries. Using the quilling technique, you can create beautiful, bright and various crafts, as well as paintings. This technique will be interesting for both children and adults.

The first mentions of quilling were recorded in the XIV century and monks in Mediterranean Europe were engaged in this type of needlework. Monks created ornate paper decorations. All this was explained by the fact that ordinary people could not afford such an expensive material at that time as paper, which is now available to almost everyone.

In the XV-XVI centuries, paper-rolling was considered an art, in the XIX century - a ladies' entertainment (and almost the only needlework worthy of noble ladies). For most of the 20th century, it was forgotten. And only at the end of the last century, paper-rolling again began to turn into art.

Special strips for quilling can be of a variety of colors and shades: white, black, colored, shiny, pearlescent, with a color gradually changing along the length, with double tint (one side is lighter than the other). Quilling tools can be special devices with a wooden, plastic or metal handle and a thin "fork" at the end. It is convenient to insert a strip of paper into such a "fork" and gradually roll it into a roll by turning the handle. In addition to “forks” for quilling, an awl with a thin sting is used, in this case, after twisting the paper element, there is practically no central hole left, which is appreciated when creating miniature works.

A painting using the quilling technique may well become a real masterpiece, because you can create a bright, exciting composition from ordinary paper. Most often, the themes of paintings in the quilling technique are flower arrangements, nature, insects, birds and animals, seasons, people.

For lovers of needlework, such a technique for making paintings and panels as quilling will be interesting. It consists in twisting thin multi-colored paper strips in a spiral into rolls, and then giving them different shapes. Then, from the resulting elements, incredibly beautiful openwork flowers, trees, animals, birds and much more are glued together. A master class with step-by-step photos of their creation will help you learn how to create beautiful panels and quilling paintings.

For novice needlewomen, you will need to prepare everything that is required to make paintings. You need double-sided colored paper, preferably not very thin. Paper with a clerical knife is cut into strips of 3 mm. Also in shops for creativity they sell ready-made paper strips, the palette of their colors is very diverse. To curl the rolls, you can use a regular toothpick, on the tip of which you can make a file to fix the edge of the paper strip. Or purchase a special "twist" for quilling, which resembles an awl, only the rod is shorter and its end is bifurcated.

You will also need glue that does not stain. It is customary to use PVA glue, but other stationery is also suitable. To make small items comfortable to hold, you will need tweezers. Short sharp scissors. Attention should be paid to the base on which the image will be located. A photo frame, colored cardboard, cuts of embossed monochromatic wallpaper are well suited. Having prepared these materials and tools, you can start making a picture or panel.

Simple flowers

In the quilling technique, very realistic flowers are obtained. The openwork elements of which they are composed add grace and tenderness.

It is better to start making pictures with flowers step by step with their simple types. The simplest to perform are chamomile.

We make a free roll from white strips of paper, glue the edge of the strip, give it a teardrop shape. This makes a petal. Glue several petals together in a circle.

Cut a strip out of yellow colored paper that will be four times wider than the strips for the petals. Make cuts along the edge so that you get a fringe.

Twist into a tight roll, glue the edge of the strip and straighten the fringe, directing the cut edges from the center to the sides. Place the yellow center between the petals and glue.

For a natural shape, place the flower in your palm and press in the middle. The chamomile will become concave.

The stalk is made of wire. It needs to be wrapped in green corrugated paper. Glue the edge of the green strip to the end of the stem and wind the tape over it. Make a small funnel, glue the flower inside.

Sunflowers are another easy-to-follow flower. These bright sunny colors make very beautiful paintings and panels, which, with their rich color, cheer up and fill with energy.

Interesting and delicate panels are obtained from sakura branches. Sakura has simple flowers. They are made from dense rolls, pressing the center of each petal. Five petals are glued together in a circle. In the middle, either stamens are placed, which are sold in shops for creativity, or beads are strung on a fishing line. You can make the middle lush and glue a fringed roll in the center. The twig is made of wire wrapped in brown corrugated paper. Or a spiral is twisted from brown paper strips and pulled out, then glued to the base, giving the desired shape.

Improving skill

After mastering simple flowers, you can try making more complex lilies. In nature, there are many species of this flower and their color is different.

To create a lily, in addition to the standard quilling set, you will also need a gel pen to apply dots, like a living flower.

You need to make three large petals. The photo shows its scheme, and the numbers indicate the diameter of the free rolls, which must be bent as in the diagram.

Glue the elements together.

Wrap the elements around with a common border several times.

There are three such petals.

They are made according to the same principle as the previous petals. You also need to make three of them.

Make a tight roll and form a funnel out of it. Glue the smaller petals in the center at the same distance from each other.

Glue the larger petals in a checkerboard pattern above the tier. The middle should be empty so that the stamens can be glued to the center.

For the stamens, you need to form small elements in the form of moons from burgundy rolls. Then cut a strip of paper lengthwise into three strips, measure the length of the stamens, glue some edges together, and fold the other edges. Glue the burgundy moons on these curved edges. The stamens are ready.

We glue the stamens into the center of the flower.

Now you need to make a pestle. Three small dense green rolls are glued to the strip.

Glue the pestle. Lily is done.

So, gradually complicating the task, you can learn how to make incredible flowers.

Orchids on a branch look great. These very unusual flowers are distinguished by their peculiar shape and color. Their petals are made either like those of a lily, or from dense concave rolls. Orchids are suitable for both paintings and panels. A table composition in a quilling flower pot will also look great.

Seasons

Wonderful bright pictures are made on the autumn theme. Autumn is characterized by bright warm colors. Landscapes, bouquets of yellow, orange leaves and red berries of viburnum and mountain ash - all this looks incredibly colorful, as you can see in the photo below.

If you are looking for an interesting hobby or - try quilling! This seemingly simple needlework will make your imagination play, and for children it will be a useful activity for the development of motor skills. Don't believe me? See for yourself!

What is it?

Interesting! The name comes from the English quill, which means "bird feather". If you choose a Russian analogue, you can call this technique paper-rolling or, more elegantly, the art of paper filigree.

The essence of quilling is to create flat or volumetric paintings and crafts using strips of thick paper curled in a special way. Lines and skeins are organically intertwined, creating outlines of flowers and animals, painting landscapes and portraits.

Quilling is done based on their own imagination or on quilling schemes. Previously, a feather was used to twist ribbons, which is reflected in the name of the art. Now, needles and toothpicks are used for these purposes, and the choice of paper has become much wider. And the main advantage of this art lies in the fact that it is available to almost everyone - the main thing is to understand its foundations.

A bit of history

Information! If the East is considered the homeland of origami, then the situation with quilling is more complicated. A number of sources date the origin of this type of handicraft to the 1st-2nd century. The timing is not accidental - in 105, paper was invented in China.

According to another version, Catholic nuns were the first to engage in paper rolling in the XIV-XV centuries. The creation of medallions and postcards from quilling with their own hands also attracted secular ladies. For a long time, common people could not afford paper, so this technique was the prerogative of wealthy citizens. Paper-rolling took an especially significant place among the applied arts of Korea.

Whatever it was, but the quilling technique was enriched by the traditions of different countries and times. And unlike the first products made in it, it has come down to us intact.

Types of products

Of course, the differences between Western and Eastern quilling crafts are as noticeable as the difference in the mentality of people from different countries. So, European samples are simple, clear, and do not require a long time to execute. In the East, craftsmen painstakingly work on each curl and create massive, often voluminous paintings, figurines and jewelry.

Idea! Depending on the preferences of the person to whom you want to present the quilling for a birthday or on another occasion, you can choose the style of performance. If the recipient is fond of Japanese culture, the voluminous sakura, consisting of many complex details, will be just to his liking. Lover modern you can please with a laconic and uncomplicated, but at the same time, thoughtful postcard.

On a note! Using quilling, they create not only pictures, but also figurines, vases, snowflakes, boxes, decorative cups and saucers and even chess.

Idea!Made using the quilling technique look very bright butterflies... You can make several pieces of different colors and place them on the leaves of indoor flowers.

Set of tools

Quilling is good because you do not need a special cabinet or super-sophisticated professional tools. The set of tools boils down to a small list:

  1. Paper strips of different widths (3, 4, 6 and 10 mm);

    Advice!Don't skimp on paper if possible. The quality of this material will determine not only the final result, but also the process of the work itself. After all, special paper is easier to bend and less damaged.

  2. A device that allows you to spin ribbons. This can be a needle, a toothpick, or a needle stuck into a wooden stick with a large but bitten eye. A special typewriter can be found among other handicraft supplies.
  3. Tweezers. To prevent your fingers from sticking to parts and cardboard when gluing, you need to use tweezers with flat ends.
  4. Scissors. Sharp and thin will work best.
  5. Glue with a brush. White PVA glue is great, which is easy to find in any stationery store. If there is no brush in it, use a toothpick to lubricate the parts - this will avoid marks on the paper.
  6. The foundation. Cardboard is great as a canvas. In addition, you can choose the desired tone in harmony with the image.

Advice! To create a fringe, you can resort to using a special device that cuts it without any extra effort. By finding such a tool, you can save a lot of time. Also useful stencil with different circles.

In addition, ready-made paper rolling kits can be found in stores specializing in quilling and.

Ideas for beginners

How to make a quilling? If you do not often do needlework, do not worry, as it is easy to comprehend this art from the very beginning. After all, even simple crafts look beautiful if done carefully.

On a note! Quilling for children is a fun and rewarding activity that promotes the development of fine motor skills and imagination. It's even better if you work together on the craft. Carried away, the child will be able to prove himself, which does not always happen in school.

Before, you need to master the technique of creating parts. Perhaps the easiest way to make flower petals. To do this, you need to take a strip of paper, twist it into a tube, and then flatten it on one side. Having made several of these parts, you can lay out a flower that will decorate any postcard.

You can create a more complex craft from similar parts. For example, a heart with a candy. For this, in addition to the tools already listed, you will need the following materials:

  1. Sweetie. It is desirable that the delicacy is round, but its packaging protrudes from both sides outside the contents.
  2. Thick white cardboard base.
  3. Colored (red or pink) paper.
  4. Transparent narrow tape.
    • Step 1. Create a cardboard base. Draw a heart with a central axis of 7 cm and a width of 8 cm. Draw a circle inside. A stencil is useful for this, you can also use a compass. From the top line of the circle, you need to step back a centimeter down and put a point, draw a semicircle through it. Cut the resulting oval.
    • Step 2. Next is the preparation of the tubes, as described above. You can, by the way, not compress them. Then you get closed, round spirals. Or, on the contrary, you can close the skein from two sides, getting something that looks like an eye.

Advice! Use one or both options as you see fit.

What is quilling, what is needed for this skill and the technique of handicrafts. Easy quilling schemes, 29 photos and videos for creating shapes.

Quilling originated in the 14th century, now it is experiencing another birth. Many are attracted by the fact that such beauty can be created with your own hands from paper strips.

Quilling for beginners - what you need to prepare

For those who have never been involved in such creativity, it is better to start with simple crafts. It can be:

  • postcards;
  • snowflakes;
  • flowers;
  • panels;
  • images.

They will tell you how to make a craft using the quilling technique for beginners. Below are the basic shapes that are used to create true pieces of fine art. First you need to prepare everything you need for this type of creativity.

If you have the opportunity to buy a quilling kit, buy it. The basic kit includes:
  • strips of colored paper;
  • a template with a grid, radii, guides applied to it;
  • a device with a bifurcated metal tip, with which paper tapes are twisted;
  • glue;
  • small scissors;
  • tweezers.
More complete sets for quilling are also available. There is a ruler with round holes to make twisting elements of the desired size along it; pins for rough fastening of parts. Ready-made kits are also sold, in which there is a diagram, blanks for making flowers, a butterfly, a picture and so on.

If you do not have the opportunity to buy a ready-made set, this should not stop those who want to create. Tape twisting quilling tools can be transformed into:

  • nail scissors with straight ends;
  • awl;
  • kernel;
  • gypsy igloo;
  • a toothpick.

Cut off its sharp part from a toothpick, and bifurcate the resulting tip with a clerical knife. In this hole, you will insert the edge of the paper tape and twist it.

When using nail scissors, paper strips are placed between two blades. Next, the tape is wrapped around this tool and a spiral of the desired size is obtained.

When using an awl and a gypsy needle, the edge of the strip is superimposed on the metal part, held with two fingers of the free hand and twisted. They also work with a rod, but in this case, the core of the workpiece may turn out to be larger than necessary, then any of the four tools listed above are used.

Quilling paper strips can also be replaced. To do this, cut them out of white or colored double-sided paper.

Quilling schemes

A detailed description of the manufacture of various elements of this needlework will help you create real masterpieces over time.

The main elements of quilling are:

  • tight and loose spiral;
  • curl;
  • drop and curved drop;
  • semicircle;
  • eye;
  • arrow;
  • sheet;
  • heart;
  • triangle;
  • crescent;
  • square;
  • foot;
  • horns.
Almost all work begins with making a "tight spiral". Take a strip of quilling paper. If there is no such material, then lay a sheet of A4 paper horizontally in front of you, with the movement of scissors from the bottom up, cut a strip equal to the width of 3-5 mm. Attach the tip between the blades of nail scissors, in the slot of a toothpick or a special quilling tool.

Hold the paper strip with your left hand and the tool with your right. If you have a double-sided strip, then its seamy part should look towards the rod. Rotate the tool clockwise, and with the fingers of your left hand, hold the spiral that begins to form from above and below so that the curls are even and level.

When the tape is over, drop a little glue on its free end and attach it to the spiral so that it does not unwind, and the workpiece looks neat. This is how you made one of the main quilling shapes. Many others are based on this very element. Those who are better at using the left hand need to do this process in a mirror image.

The next element is called a "free spiral", make it from the shape you just got. To do this, remove the spiral from the needle, let it unwind a little. You can do it differently - do not let go of the fingers of your left hand, but rotate them a little in the center of this quilling element, and the spiral will weaken.

To make a "curl", you do not need to glue the free end of the curled tape to the spiral. To make a "drop" it is necessary to squeeze the "free spiral" on one side with your fingers for a few seconds. A "curved drop" is obtained if you bend the corner of the "drop".

An element called "eye" is also easy to make. To do this, the "free spiral" needs to be pulled slightly to the sides and clamped on two opposite sides, then released. The "leaf" shape will turn out if you bend the corners of the "eye", one - to the right, the second - to the left. To make a "semicircle", take a free spiral, press on it so that the upper side becomes rounded and the lower one is even.

It clearly shows how the elements are made using the quilling photo technique. Looking at it, you will understand how to create an "arrow". To do this, press your fingers on 3 sides of the spiral to make a triangle, now press its two corners to each other, leave the third as it was.

To make a greeting card using the quilling technique, you can decorate it with an element called "horns". To do this, take a long paper tape, bend it in half, wind the right side in a spiral clockwise direction, and the left side counterclockwise.

The "heart" shape is made in the same way, only the right half of the ribbon is wound counterclockwise, and the left half - clockwise. The junction of these two elements must be pinched with your fingers to form the corner of the heart.

The "crescent" is made of the "eye", its 2 opposite corners are bent in the form of the letter "C". The "triangle" will turn out when the "free spiral" is squeezed in three places, and to make a "square" it must be done from 4 sides.

For the "foot", you need to make a "triangle" shape, and then bend two opposite sides of it with your finger to the center.

How flowers are made using the quilling technique

Now that you know how to make the basic elements for this type of creativity, you can start the fun process and create original cards. If you want to decorate them with these colors, then from the "free spiral" make a "drop" shape. Use different colored quilling paper to keep the petals colorful. The middle of the flower will be formed from a "free spiral" shape.

Put glue on a postcard or cardboard, attach a "free spiral" here. Also, using glue, fix a few petals around it. The stem is glued in the same way. For it, take a strip of green paper. The middle leaf, as you can see, is made of the "drop" shape, and the top and bottom ones are made of the "eyes" elements. After the glue is dry, the work is complete.

You can make other postcards using the quilling technique. For beginners, there is another simple option.

As you can see, the middle of the flowers is a "free spiral". The petals are made from the same element but in a different shade. Decorate the card with a heart element and an eye shape. A beautiful creation will be appreciated by the one to whom you present such a gift.

How snowflakes are made using the quilling technique

For the New Year, you can make a snowflake. For her you will need:
  • quilling paper;
  • stencil;
  • tailor's pins;
  • glue gun or PVA;
  • quilling tool.
Cut 3 paper strips in half, you need 5 pieces. Insert the tip of the first into the hole of the quilling tool, tighten the tape tightly. Remove it and insert it into the hole of the stencil. Let's say it is 10 mm. You will have your first workpiece with this diameter. Make the next 4 elements the same size.

To remove the spiral from the stencil, pick it up in the center with a toothpick and remove it, pressing the workpiece with your finger. Let it unwind a little, glue the tip. You have a "free spiral". Place all 5 pieces in the center of the template, it will be easy to align them with it.

If beginners make a snowflake using the quilling technique, then it is better to attach the elements to the template with a pin, and then glue them together. Then the details will be arranged as needed.

As you can see in the photo, around the five “free spiral” elements there are 10 “eyes” parts. Make them and glue them together and with the center pieces of the snowflake.

The next 5 parts of the "free spiral" are made of solid strips, so they will be 2 times larger than similar ones glued to the center of the snowflake. A stencil will also help to achieve their evenness. Use a hole with a diameter of 2 cm. After gluing the tip to the spiral, let it unwind and attach each such blank to the previous row of parts.

To prevent the “free spiral” in the snowflake from unwinding, direct the center of the spiral to its edge, press down. You can apply a little glue here so that the middle of the workpiece moves to the edge.

As you can see, the "tight spiral" attribute of winter and New Years is being completed. You need 5 such elements, made using a stencil. Glue them in place. If you will be hanging a snowflake, pass a strong thread through the center of one "tight spiral" and out through the middle of another. Tie a bow and hang it on the tree or on the wall.

Painting with gerberas using quilling technique

This panel is created using simple elements, but it will take some effort, especially for beginners, to achieve the desired result. The assistant will be a detailed master class describing the process of work in stages, he will also give the necessary tips in the form of a photo.

For work you will need the following materials:

  • strips for quilling 3 and 10 mm wide;
  • colored and white cardboard (15 * 20 cm);
  • textured sheet of light, pastel shade;
  • two-tone green paper;
  • sharp clerical knife;
  • brush, glue;
  • glitters of matching colors.

Step by step description of work

  1. Red and white paper stripes are glued to each other, getting long, about 50 cm each.
  2. The next step is twisting the rolls from the resulting ribbons, dissolving to a diameter of 13-14 mm.
  3. Each spiral is shaped like a petal; tweezers are convenient for this. One gerbera holds 12 red and white blanks.
  4. Following this scheme, wind more spirals, 13 of which dissolve to a diameter of 9 mm, and 10 pieces - to 7. Then all the blanks are squeezed along the edges, getting eyes.
  5. A circle is cut out of white cardboard, the diameter of which is 4 cm. In the center, draw a smaller one - 1.5 cm in size. The inner one will serve as the border of the core of the flower. A cut is made on one side to the center, it will allow you to form a cone, which will serve as the basis for the flower.
  6. Large, white-red petals are glued to its outer part, and the workpiece is allowed to dry out.
  7. On the inside, observing a checkerboard order, the middle ones are glued, slightly stepping back from the edge of the cone.
  8. Creation of a core: a fringe is made from a peach strip 1 cm wide and 15 cm long and glued with a 3 mm black strip, it is cut to 20 cm in length. ...
  9. Then they are rolled into a roll.
  10. Returning to the flower blank, the third row of petals is glued, also in a checkerboard pattern, and then a core with glue at the bottom is inserted inside, the fringe stripes are straightened.
  11. According to this scheme, two more flower models are twisted, changing the color of the elements.
  12. To make buds, you need tight rolls of dark and light green stripes.
  13. Using a pencil, squeeze out the bottom of the spirals to form a cone.
  14. The inside of the figure is coated with glue and left to dry.
  15. Three petals and a suitable core are inserted into it, which is twisted from a short strip (7-8 cm).
  16. There are two types of leaves in this picture, differing in the manufacturing technique. The first ones are created from paper ribbons of different shades of green. The resulting spiral is stretched to 3–4 cm in diameter.
  17. The edges are pressed with tweezers, forming a leaf.
  18. The second type is made from ordinary green double-sided paper. It is folded in half, and then a curly blank is cut out with scissors.
  19. Then the resulting shape is laid out with an accordion.
  20. After ironing the folds, unfold the sheet. You will need 4 of them.
  21. All the main components of the picture are in stock, you can proceed to the last stage of preparation - creating the base. Textured paper in the shape of a smaller rectangle is glued onto a prepared sheet of cardboard of bright fuchsia color.
  22. Before sticking to the background, the flowers are decorated with glitters - sparkles, it is better to pour them with a dry brush. You can fix them by greasing the edges of the petals with a solution of PVA glue with water.
  23. A little to the side from the center, the resulting models are fixed, as in the picture below.
  24. Leaves from strips are first glued under the flowers.
