New Year’s Day

My name is Catherine. I’m 12 years old. In our family’s favorite holiday is New Year’s Eve. In late December, the streets, parks, plazas dress in festive attire. Through the streets and squares stretched garlands colored lanterns. Everyone is preparing for the New Year. And in the main square set a huge tree. We are beginning to prepare for the holiday. On Christmas fairs buy each other gifts, Christmas decorations and tinsel. December 30, we set an artificial tree, and I myself dress up her for the holiday, hang toys, garlands. December 31 I help my mother to cook a festive table on arrival. New Year’s Eve always seems to me a magical and unforgettable. At midnight, after the president’s speech on television, begin to beat the chimes. We congratulate each other a happy new year and make a wish, and then exchange gifts. When I was little, then found the gifts under the tree and thought that they brought me Santa Claus. And even though I’m an adult, and I do not believe that there is a Santa Claus, but New Year’s Eve want to be in a fairy tale, and to believe in miracles. The New Year brings a lot of joy and fun. На новогодних ярмарках покупаем друг другу подарки, ёлочные игрушки и мишуру. 30 декабря мы устанавливаем искусственную ёлку и я сама наряжаю её к празднику, вешаю игрушки, гирлянды. 31 декабря я помогаю маме приготовить праздничный стол к приезду гостей. Новогодняя ночь кажется мне всегда волшебной и незабываемой. В полночь, после выступления президента по телевизору, начинают бить куранты. Мы поздравляем друг друга с новым годом и загадываем желание, а потом обмениваемся подарками. Когда я была маленькая, то подарки находила под ёлкой и думала, что их мне принёс Дед Мороз. И хоть я уже взрослая, и не верю, что существует Дед Мороз, но в новогоднюю ночь хочется оказаться в сказке и поверить в чудо. Новый год приносит много радости и веселья. Я каждый раз с нетерпением жду этого праздника.

There are many holidays in our country. They are: New Year"s Day, Christmas, Women"s Day, Victory Day, May Day and others.

I like New Year"s Day, it is my favourite holiday. The 1st of January is a winter holiday and now it is the first day of the New Year.

Peter the First changed the Russian calendar in 1699. He made the 31st of December, 1699 the last day of the year. The first of January 1700 became New Year"s Day.

The 1st of January is in the middle of winter. The weather is usually fine and there is a lot of snow everywhere. As the 1st of January is a holiday I don"t go to school and my parents don"t go to work.

We usually have got a very interesting New Year"s party at school. We have got it on the 28th or 29th of December.

Our family prepares for this holiday beforehand. My father buys and brings home a beautiful New Year"s tree at the end of December. Our family has a tradition to buy it. I like to decorate the New Year"s tree with toys, little coloured lights, sweets and a beautiful star on the top.

My mother and grandmother prepare our holiday supper and lay the table. I make a cake.

All the members of our family clean the flat before this nice holiday and then each of us try to dress well. We like to see the New Year in at home with our relatives. They come to see us at 11 o"clock in the evening.

At 12 o"clock we are sitting at the table and we are glad to see the New Year in. We say, "Best wishes for the New Year!"

I hope that next year will be better than the last one.

The New Year"s Day is always connected with our new hopes and dreams.

It is a pleasant moment to get presents on the New Year"s Eve.

I usually get many nice useful things from my parents and relatives.

My parents put their presents under the New Year"s tree.

We don"t go to bed till morning, we watch TV, dance, eat tasty things and make jokes.

I enjoy this holiday very much.

New Year Holiday

There are a lot of holidays during the year. Some of them are national, some of them are private or religious but one holiday is celebrated all over the world. It is New Year. This holiday can be called international as each person on our planet enjoys celebrating it.

New Year is a magical time when all the miracles seem to come true. People have a great opportunity to look at their deeds and events during the previous year in order to decide what to do further. All of us are full of hope and joy. We are eager to believe that the New Year is able to be much better. We hope that it brings only the Good and this thought makes us happy.

Before New Year people usually draw the line of theirs aims and plans. They try to finish all incomplete duties and solve all the problems in order to leave all negative things in the past. People decorate theirs houses with bright and sparkling New Years tree. Children write long letter to Santa Claus with all their wishes. Mothers and wives cook special tasty New Years dinner. It is the great moment to spend all the time with people you love.

Each nation has its own rituals concerning New Year celebration like for example, Italians who throw away all the unnecessary things. But in spite of all national differences each of us hopes for better life and optimistic future. We are all the same whispering our devout desires as the clock strikes 12 times.

What is New Year"s?
Does everyone celebrate the New Year? Does the celebration fall in the same day each year? I think New Year"s is a holiday that everyone celebrates but will not be celebrated on the same day of each year. For instance, in my country, Vietnam, New Year"s day is different from the American New Year because we don"t go by the American calendar. We go by the Chinese calendar. Usually my New Year"s celebration is in Mid-January or February; while the Laotians" New Year is in April. The youngsters especially look forward to this ceremony because each one receives a small sum of money wrapped in the traditional red envelope. On these days we eat special cakes that we don"t eat during regular days. It is called sticky rice cake " Banh Chung"?. The American New Year is not a significant celebration as the Vietnamese New Year which focuses on traditions, customs, and religious aspects important to all Vietnamese.

Traditionally, the Vietnamese New year is the lunar New Year Festival. It is the most important Vietnamese holiday, and it is called " Tet Nguyen Dan"?. It is a celebration which combines the excitement of the Fourth of July, thanksgiving, Christmas and the beginning of spring as well as the New Year. The traditional Vietnamese calendar runs in cycles of twelve years. A genie, in the form of an animal figure, dominates each year. They are in the following order: mouse, buffalo, tiger, cat, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, cock, dog, and hog. As the old year gives way to the new year, the ruling genie quietly bows out to the next genie. To recognize its importance, Vietnamese ancestors invented many rituals, rules and regulations in its honor.

New Year Celebration in my family starts in the middle of December, when we begin to decorate our apartment and buy presents. We used to decorate an artificial tree, not a real one. Artificial tree stays longer with no cutting needed. We love to decorate the tree with toys, multicolored New Year baubles, sweets and mandarins, then we put a big beautiful star on the top, and little colored lights on the tree branches.

All apartment are adorned with glittering tinsels and with hand-made fir wreath on the door. All of us hide New Year presents under the tree, we love to put the present into special boxes or in wrapping paper, so we never know what is inside. Me and my mom always cook a very sophisticated dinner, including some elaborate dishes and a cake. Our relatives come to our place, and they also put their presents under the tree.

Just before midnight at 11.55 pm our president addresses all the people with his New Year speech. He reflects on the past year, and wishes everybody happiness in New Year. Then we raise a toast while the chiming clock on the Kremlin Tower is counting down the last seconds of the year. After that my grandfather wears a costume of Grandfather Frost, he plays funny games with us, we dance together, sing New Year songs. Late at night we start to open our presents. Magical time! I usually get many nice useful things from my family and relatives!

I love to spend this holiday with my family!

Затем мы поднимаем бокалы под бой Кремлевских курантов, отсчитывающих последние секунды старого года. После этого мой дедушка одевает костюм Деда Мороза, играет с нами в веселые игры, мы танцуем и поем новогодние песни. Поздно ночью мы приступаем к распаковыванию подарков. Волшебное время!
